COMMENT DEADLINE: December 1st
Now is the time for YOU to act on climate change! Power plants are the number one cause of climate changing pollution and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is finally proposing to make power plants clean up their act. But the EPA’s proposal for Montana is weak and the forces opposing any carbon pollution controls are rich and powerful. We need you to show your support for stronger emission reduction goals for Montana and encourage our Governor and the EPA to support reducing carbon pollution as much as possible.
We all know that climate change is a serious threat. We’re already experiencing it here in Montana with longer and more intense fire seasons, less snowpack, and reduced flows in our rivers and streams. The costs to our environment, our economy, and our way of life continue to mount, and if we ignore it, the consequences of climate change will only get worse.
Fortunately, we now have the opportunity to do something about it! For the first time in history, the EPA is proposing a plan to limit the amount of carbon pollution that old power plants can dump into our atmosphere. The proposed Clean Power Plan is a critical first step but it needs to be stronger.
The Clean Power Plan proposes to reduce carbon pollution from power plants nationwide by 30% from 2005 levels by the year 2030.
The good news:
- The proposal is based on each state’s unique energy mix and policies.
- The plan gives states such as Montana nearly unlimited flexibility to develop plans that work for them, including, in the case of Montana, utilizing the enormous potential for clean and renewable energy and energy efficiency.
The Bad News:
- Unfortunately, the proposal underestimates Montana’s clean energy potential and only requires the state to reduce its power plant carbon pollution by 21% by 2030. This is the second weakest state target in the nation!
As Montanans, we know we can do better in reducing carbon pollution. We have the second best wind resource in the country, terrific solar potential, and we haven’t even scratched the surface of energy efficiency savings. We can rapidly and thoughtfully transition our energy system and build an efficient and more sustainable economy.
Please don’t pass up this opportunity to speak up! Show your support for the Clean Power Plan and ask that Montana’s carbon reduction goal be strengthened. Take a minute, and send a note to Gov. Steve Bullock and the EPA today. Encourage them to support and adopt a rule that effectively reduces carbon pollution and helps to protect us from dangerous climate change.
